Making bans/demos

Ok i'll copy some stuff from steambans forum and also some of my own ways of recording a demo.

If you suspect someone of hacking or they have the blatant screenshake this is how i do things.

1. status copy the suspects nick (this will let u auto observe someone even if they have weird characters in their nick
2. ma_observe [paste the nick]
3. record [demoname]
4. sb_status IMPORTANT  you must not forget this step or steambans will reject the demo without even bothering to watch it, this is due to the apparent ability to fake steam id's in demos. the sb_status encrypts the id into i believe MD5 hash so someone cant record a demo of say a mate hacking then fake your own steam id to get u banned.
5. record 3-5mins worth of play, dont record more than 5mins tho as each min recored translates to about 2mb and steambans wont accept over 5mb files. If need be stop your demo at about 4mins then repeat steps 3 to 5 but dont forget to name the demo as demoname2 or your first one will be overwritten.

Steambans advice for a best possible demo

Before we start it is important to be aware of that the higher the ping you have the larger the margin of error on the demo is. You should not be recording a demo on a server that lags you or if you are getting much choke/loss.

Second: be aware of how long you are recording. Each minute is approximately 2 megabyte of demo which will be around 500KB zipped. So take demos that are not longer then 5 minutes before recording a new one.

Let's move on.

Step 1
When you have located the player that you would like to demo be sure to get into a position where you can spectate him without him really noticing. If the server allows spectators you can record the demo from spectator-mode. If you either can?t spectate the person, or the server doesn?t allow spectators, you can "chooseteam" -> select a team, but do not select a skin. This way you will have spectating abilities, but not be forced to spawn each round. If for some reason the above doesn?t work, you can type "kill" in console when you spawn.
Note: The latter will alert a vigilant cheater so be aware not to draw to much attention to yourself.

Step 2
Once you have gotten into the spectating position start the demo by bringing down the console and typing "record [demoname]". The demo will appear in the cstrike folder with the [demoname].dem. Be sure to follow the suspect/cheater all the time, do not "flip" between people to show where they are on the map compared to the suspected cheater. Should the cheater die before the round ends pick a random other person to spectate till he dies.

Step 3
After you have started recording you need to verify the ID of the player.. Bring down the console again and type "sb_status" [enter].

Step 4
The final step is simply to type "stop" in console when the 5 minutes of recording has ended, and if you think it is insufficient make a new recording taking the same steps once again.

Once you have recorded the demo(s) and made the sb_status call in console, jump out of the game and browse to the cstrike folder and "zip" (WinZip) or "rar" (WinRAR) them.
Note: By selecting the ?maximum/best/slowest? compression method in either WinZip or WinRAR, you can compress the demo(s) more efficiently. This allows demos of greater size to be submitted, and reduces the uploading time.

When done all above correctly the only thing left to do is to submit the .zip/.rar to SteamBans.com.

Submission proof requirements

There are new and stricter requirements for ban submissions.

We are initiating a harder line towards proof gathering to stand better in case a ban is protested.

A SteamBans Protected Server
This server has to run SBSRV 2.6 or higher (HL1) or SBSRC 1.2 or higher (HL2)

To make a demo on these servers and pass the proof requirements simply type SB_STATUS in console while you record the demo.

Start the demo and type "record [DEMONAME]" in console
Type "sb_status" and hit enter.
Record the needed proof, then type "stop"
Above commands are without the "quotation marks"

Remember to do a NEW sb_status whenever a mapchange has occured! If there is no evidence of cheating before a mapchange, and no sb_status is made AFTER the mapchange the sub will be declined. Also do not forget to do a NEW sb_status whenever the suspected player is reconnecting during recording.
Do also note that snapshots are NOT needed with sb_status and because sb_status is required there is no need to include snapshots.
